NW Embassy

Here is a small kitchen remodel we did in a unit in the ninety year old Embassy in NW Portland.  When I say "small" I mean small, but very practical for the client, but she did really needed an update to the area.  She wanted to keep as much of the original character as possible so we re-used the upper cabinetry and the glass doors, kept the traditional ball hinge door style with cup pulls.  Of course in these old buildings we are always caught off-guard with original construction and all work done since, but this particular building had interior walls and floor structure I had never encountered before.  Instead of typical wood framed interior walls with lathe and plaster (as we had hoped) these walls were built with small steel members with mesh tied as a backing for a very thick plaster.  Much more indicative of a stucco.  And of course the ceiling and floor are solid concrete with wood sleepers for the wood flooring.  To top it off everything is drastically out of level, parking is a nightmare, and the freight elevator was like being in a Hitchcock movie.  As usual we got through it unscathed and the product looks great.  Here are some of the specifics to the job:
2" mitered edge quartz, undermount sink
carrera subway backsplash
drawer dishwasher
refinished fir and oak flooring
new lower flush mount lower cabinetry, wainscot,
new wainscot
